Topic
Initiating a replacement כהן גדול, the מחלוקת over the כהן הדיוט's אבנט, and the status of the replacement after the original כהן גדול returns.
Overview
The amud opens by finishing an earlier question: a replacement כהן גדול needs no special ceremony, because doing the עבודה initiates him, just as later כלים were initiated by their use. Next, רב דימי reports a מחלוקת between רבי and רבי אלעזר ברבי שמעון: was a כהן הדיוט's אבנט made of כלאים or of plain linen (בוץ)? The גמרא tries to prove who held which view from a ברייתא, but the proof is rejected because the ברייתא can be read two ways. רבין then brings a clear tradition: everyone agrees about the כהן גדול's אבנט, and רבי says the כהן הדיוט's אבנט is כלאים. רב נחמן בר יצחק supports רבין from a ברייתא in which רבי rejects רבי דוסא's view that the כהן גדול's יום הכפורים garments may be reused by a כהן הדיוט. The גמרא then returns to the replacement כהן גדול. רבי מאיר says the replacement keeps all the laws of a כהן גדול. רבי יוסי says he can serve in neither role, because of איבה and because מעלין בקודש ולא מורידין. The amud ends as רבה בר בר חנה begins a statement in רבי יוחנן's name, which continues on the next amud.

their anointing consecrates them;
