Yoma 14b: אביי on רבי עקיבא and the הזאה, and the dispute over whether the קטורת or the נרות comes first

Overview

This amud opens by finishing a source about the water used for הזאה. אביי then shows that our משנה can fit even רבי עקיבא's view: they sprinkle on the כהן גדול toward evening, so he is pure again by the next day. The גמרא next asks why our משנה puts the קטורת before cleaning the נרות, while מסכת תמיד puts the מנורה first. רב הונא's answer that תמיד follows רבי שמעון איש המצפה is rejected, and רבי יוחנן says instead that סדר יומא follows him. The same contradiction then appears between two משניות inside יומא itself. אביי answers that the lamps were cleaned in two stages: five lamps before the קטורת and two lamps after it. When this is challenged from אביי's own list of the daily service, the גמרא answers that the list follows אבא שאול and our משנה follows the רבנן, as a ברייתא records. The amud ends with אבא שאול's source in the פסוק and the start of the רבנן's reading of that פסוק, which continues on the next amud.
