Overview

This עמוד opens with the end of a ברייתא listing foods not given to the כהן גדול before יום כיפור, because they may cause קרי. The mention of גרגיר (arugula) leads to a short side-discussion: it is the אורות of the פסוק, and it is good for the eyes. The mention of eggs leads to רב's advice that a guest should not eat eggs or sleep in his host's garment. The גמרא then tells how רב and רב נחמן, when traveling, would announce that they wished to marry a local woman for their stay. It challenges this from רבי אליעזר בן יעקב, who warns that children of such marriages may unknowingly marry each other; the answer is that the children of famous רבנן are well known. A second challenge from רבא, that a woman who agrees to marry must count שבעה נקיים, gets two answers: messengers were sent ahead, or there was only seclusion and no real relationship. Then a new משנה describes how the זקני כהונה take the כהן גדול to בית אבטינס and make him swear not to change the עבודה, after which everyone cries. The משנה ends by describing how he is kept awake all night with Torah learning and readings from איוב, עזרא, דברי הימים and דניאל.
