The טבילה before entering the עזרה (חציצה, partial entry, the long knife), and the location of the כהן גדול's five טבילות, from which אביי calculates the height of עין עיטם
Overview
This amud continues אביי's questions to רב יוסף about the טבילה needed before entering the עזרה. רב יוסף rules that whatever the רבנן enacted follows the Torah's model, so a חציצה invalidates even this rabbinic טבילה. He then proves from the מצורע, who immerses before putting his thumbs into the עזרה at שער ניקנור, that partial entry counts as entry. The גמרא asks whether someone standing outside who slaughters inside with a long knife needs טבילה. It works the question through בן זומא and through the רבנן who argue with רבי יהודה, and ends with תיקו. Next the גמרא turns to the משנה's line about the כהן גדול's five טבילות and ten קידושין. A ברייתא teaches that all were in בית הפרוה except the first, which was on the roof of שער המים. From this אביי calculates that the spring עין עיטם was 23 אמות above the courtyard floor: a 20-אמה gate plus a מקוה 3 אמות deep.
