Overview

The amud opens by finishing a discussion of the פרה אדומה. אביי explains that רבי יהודה really disagrees with the משנה even though his view is not recorded. The גמרא then learns from 'והזה הטהור על הטמא' that a טבול יום may sprinkle the פרה waters. רבי אסי adds that even רבי יוחנן and ריש לקיש found no fixed pattern in these verses. They could only state the general rule of מַשְׁמָע מוֹצִיא מִיַּד מַשְׁמָע וּמַשְׁמָע מִמֵּילָא. רבי יוחנן rejects a ברייתא saying a זר may not slaughter the פרה, and he even disagrees with his own teacher on this point. The גמרא explains that the כהן גדול mentions the כהנים only in his second וידוי, because he must be atoned for first. A new משנה describes slaughtering the bull, stirring its blood, and scooping coals. It then lists many differences between a regular day and יום כיפור: the coal pan, the קטורת, the ramp, the washing, and the number of wood piles. The גמרא corrects the משנה so that the blood-stirrer stands outside the היכל, and it begins a ברייתא on 'וכל אדם לא יהיה באהל מועד' that continues on the next amud.
