Feeding the dangerously ill (fixing טבל on שבת), the treatment of בולמוס with stories of the חכמים, and the signs and cause of a כלב שוטה.

Overview

This amud finishes the discussion of feeding a dangerously ill person forbidden food. If the טבל can be fixed into חולין, we tithe it, even on שבת and even when the produce grew in an עציץ שאינו נקוב. The גמרא explains that the dispute between בן תימא and the תנא קמא is about whether טבל or תרומה is more severe. It then shows that רבה's rule fits even רבי's lenient view about the snake-bitten person, because grain looks like Torah-level טבל. Next comes בולמוס, a dangerous attack of hunger. It is treated with honey and sweets, but according to אביי only after real food, and several אמוראים list other remedies. Stories follow about רבי יהודה and רבי יוסי suffering בולמוס, and about רבי מאיר, who suspected the innkeeper כידור because of his name and so saved his money. That story ends with the lesson of מים אחרונים, and with the other חכמים also learning to pay attention to names. Finally, the גמרא returns to the משנה's כלב שוטה. It lists the signs of a mad dog and the dispute between רב and שמואל about what causes the madness. The practical difference between their views is given on the next amud.

Opening lines

אֶפְשָׁר בְּחוּלִּין — פְּשִׁיטָא?

"If it is possible with non-sacred food" — that is obvious!

לָא צְרִיכָא, בְּשַׁבָּת.

No, it is necessary for a case on Shabbat.

בְּשַׁבָּת נָמֵי, פְּשִׁיטָא —

On Shabbat as well, it is obvious —

טִלְטוּל מִדְּרַבָּנַן הוּא!

moving is only a rabbinic prohibition!
