Can an אונן eat the קרבן פסח at night? Why eating the פסח is essential, and how long אנינות lasts on the day of burial and the night after it.
Overview
Earlier, the גמרא found two ברייתות of רבי שמעון that seem to clash about whether an אונן may eat the קרבן פסח. רבא settles them by timing. If the death came before the פסח was slaughtered and its blood thrown, it is not brought for him. If the death came after, he eats at night, because eating the פסח is מעכב. The גמרא brings a ברייתא about יום שמועה as the source for this, and finds that the ברייתא seems to contradict itself. רב חסדא says its two parts follow different תנאים. רבה בר רב הונא splits it by sunset, which proves that eating the פסח is essential. רב אשי's reading is rejected as a mistake. The גמרא then looks for the argument between תנאים about how long אנינות lasts on the day of burial, and after several rereadings settles that רבי holds the burial day includes its night. רבא concludes from this that the day of death includes its night by Torah law. A ברייתא shows that רבי holds night אנינות is only rabbinic, and the גמרא begins its answer, which continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
רָבָא אָמַר: אִידֵּי וְאִידֵּי אַחַר חֲצוֹת,
Rava said: Both this and that are after midday,
וְלָא קַשְׁיָא;
and it is not difficult;
כָּאן קוֹדֶם שֶׁשָּׁחֲטוּ וְזָרְקוּ עָלָיו,
here, it was before they slaughtered and sprinkled on his behalf,
כָּאן לְאַחַר שֶׁשָּׁחֲטוּ וְזָרְקוּ עָלָיו.
there, it was after they slaughtered and sprinkled on his behalf.
