Blood placed in the wrong spot on the מזבח: when it can create פיגול, and how ריש לקיש, רבי יוחנן and שמואל explain the משנה's ruling.
Overview
This amud finishes a ברייתא about wrong intentions while offering a קרבן. Intent for 'outside its place' makes the קרבן פסול, while intent for 'outside its time' makes it פיגול with כרת. Intent to sprinkle the blood in the wrong spot on the next day makes it only פסול. The גמרא asks why it is not פיגול, if blood placed in the wrong spot counts as placed in the right spot. מר זוטרא answers from a פסוק that only a זריקה that permits the meat can create פיגול. רב נחמן בר יצחק adds that next-day intent can still make an offering פסול, like מחשבת הינוח according to רבי יהודה. ריש לקיש and רבי יוחנן then give two different ways to explain our משנה. ריש לקיש says the wrong-spot blood was placed with a stated intent. רבי יוחנן says it was placed in silence and simply does not count. The משנה's words 'no כרת' remain a difficulty for רבי יוחנן. He defends himself against a second challenge by following רבי יוסי, who holds that blood placed in the wrong area may not be gathered up again.
Opening lines
חוּץ לִמְקוֹמוֹ – פָּסוּל,
If he intended to do it outside its place, it is unfit,
וְאֵין בּוֹ כָּרֵת.
and there is no כרת for it.
חוּץ לִזְמַנּוֹ – פִּיגּוּל,
If he intended to do it outside its time, it is פיגול,
וְחַיָּיבִין עָלָיו כָּרֵת.
and one is liable to כרת for it.
The steps (19)
- StatementWrong place makes it unfit, wrong time makes it פיגול
- StatementIntent to sprinkle wrongly the next day makes it only unfit
- ChallengeChallenge: if wrong spot counts as right spot, this should be פיגול
- Resolutionמר זוטרא: Only a sprinkling that permits the meat creates פיגול
- Questionרב אשי asks for the source of מר זוטרא's rule
- ResponseThe source: פיגול only when the פיגול intent alone caused it
- ChallengeThen why is the offering disqualified at all?
- ResolutionLike the intent to leave the blood, per רבי יהודה
- Statementריש לקיש: truly disqualified, yet wrong spot normally counts
- ResolutionSilent placement versus placement with a statement
- ChallengeThe earlier challenges apply to ריש לקיש too
- Statementרבי יוחנן's different explanation
- ChallengeWhy would the משנה say 'no כרת'?
- ConclusionThe question stands against רבי יוחנן
- ChallengeWhat do the words 'no כרת' mean for שמואל?
- Resolutionשמואל: the words refer to placing the blood with intent
- ChallengeFor רבי יוחנן, why not gather the blood up again?
- ResolutionThe משנה follows the view that he may not gather it up
- ProofSource: רבי יוסי and רבי שמעון argue about gathering it up
