Testing whether a secondary holy item can be stricter than its source, and the sources that an אשם must be slaughtered in the צפון
Overview
The amud opens by testing a rule from the ongoing discussion: something that gets its holiness from another holy thing is never stricter than its source. The גמרא raises three cases that seem to break this rule: food bought with מעשר שני money, a תמורה, and the leftover of a פסח. Each is answered by showing the difference has another reason, such as weak holiness, a holy source, or the animal having become a שלמים. The גמרא then gives a second source that a עולה slaughtered outside the צפון is invalid: the repeated word העולה. Next it asks how we know an אשם needs the צפון, and learns the שחיטה, the קבלה and the collector's own position from ויקרא 7:2. To show the rule is required and not just ideal, it brings ויקרא 14:13 about the מצורע's אשם. That פסוק seems to be needed to bring the מצורע's אשם back to its normal rules, but the גמרא answers that writing the צפון rule twice shows it is required. The amud ends by starting to ask whether this answer works under every view of יצא לידון בדבר החדש, and the question continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
וַהֲרֵי מַעֲשֵׂר – דְּהוּא נִפְדֶּה,
But there is tithe, which can be redeemed,
וְאִילּוּ לָקוּחַ בְּכֶסֶף מַעֲשֵׂר
whereas what is bought with tithe money
אֵינוֹ נִפְדֶּה –
cannot be redeemed –
דִּתְנַן: הַלָּקוּחַ בְּכֶסֶף מַעֲשֵׂר
As we learned: what was bought with tithe money
The steps (21)
- ChallengeChallenge from מעשר שני
- ProofProof from the משנה about impure bought food
- ResolutionIts holiness is too weak to pass on
- ChallengeChallenge from a substitute animal
- ResolutionSubstitute draws power from holy, not ordinary
- ChallengeThe leftover of a פסח seems stricter than the פסח itself
- ResolutionOutside its time, a פסח is simply a שלמים
- ProofAnother source: the repeated word 'the burnt offering' means it must stay in its place
- QuestionWhere do we learn that an אשם needs the צפון?
- ResponseThe אשם is slaughtered where the עולה is slaughtered
- QuestionWhere does the collection of the blood happen?
- ResponseThe words about the blood include the collection
- QuestionMust the collector himself stand in the north?
- ResponseThe extra word adds the collector
- QuestionIs the north rule required or only the ideal?
- ResponseAnother verse makes the rule required
- ChallengeThat verse is already needed for another rule
- QuestionThe ברייתא asks why the extra words 'like the חטאת is the אשם' are needed
- ResponseThe מצורע's אשם is brought back to the normal rules of blood and fats
- ResolutionWriting the צפון rule twice shows the offering is invalid without it
- ChallengeThe answer works only under one view of the rule
