Whether heirs own their father's קרבן; whether a קרבן slaughtered שלא לשמן atones; whether an עולה atones for a מצות עשה skipped after הפרשה
Overview
The גמרא asks whether heirs own their father's קרבן. One proof says that two heirs cannot make a תמורה because they are partners. The גמרא answers that the פסוק includes the heir but speaks of only one person. It defends this answer against a comparison to redeeming מעשר שני. רב אסי then argues that if even one heir can make a תמורה, the קרבן must atone for him, as רבי יוחנן teaches. רב אשי answers that it atones for the heirs only indirectly. Next comes a new question: does a קרבן slaughtered שלא לשמן atone? רב ששת בריה דרב אידי reasons that it does not, since the owner must still bring a second one. A last question asks whether an עולה atones for a מצות עשה skipped after the animal was set aside. A proof from a ברייתא about skipping סמיכה is pushed away by רבא. רב הונא בר יהודה starts a new reading of that ברייתא, which continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
וְשׁוּתָּפִין לָא מָצוּ מְמִירִין.
and partners cannot make a substitution.
אֶלָּא אִי אָמְרַתְּ
But if you say
לָא קַנְיָא לְהוּ –
that it does not belong to them,
אָמוֹרֵי נָמֵי לִימְרוּ!
let them also make a substitution!
