When a קרבן's atonement begins, slaughtering a תודה for a friend's תודה, and רבא's rulings on a חטאת slaughtered with the wrong type or for the wrong person.
Overview
The amud opens by finishing a proof that a קרבן atones for sins done after it was set aside (הפרשה). The proof comes from the argument between רבי שמעון and the חכמים about redeeming leftover unblemished communal animals. A second proof, from רבי ירמיה's question about the two שעירי עצרת, is rejected: he may have been asking 'אם תימצי לומר'. Next, רבה and רב חסדא argue about a תודה slaughtered for the sake of a friend's תודה. רבה tries to prove from a ברייתא that it is כשרה, but the גמרא shows the ברייתא could be talking about the owner's own other תודה. Then רבא gives a set of rulings about a חטאת. Slaughtered for another חטאת, it is כשרה. Slaughtered for an עולה, it is פסולה. Slaughtered for a person who owes a חטאת, or who seems to owe nothing, it is פסולה. Slaughtered for a person who owes only an עולה, it is כשרה. רבא also says a חטאת atones for missed positive מצוות, and the amud ends with the גמרא asking how that fits his ruling about the person who owes an עולה.
Opening lines
לְדִבְרֵי רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן
According to the words of Rabbi Shimon,
אֵין נִפְדִּין תְּמִימִים,
they are not redeemed while unblemished,
לְדִבְרֵי חֲכָמִים
according to the words of the Sages,
נִפְדִּין תְּמִימִין!
they are redeemed while unblemished!

- ChallengeThen the teaching should have used the friend's case
- ResolutionThe peace offering case was needed for its own reason
- StatementA sin offering for a sin offering is fit, but not for a burnt offering
