Consecrating a field during the יובל year: רב and שמואל, the ברייתא, and the yearly redemption price

Overview

This amud continues a מחלוקת between רב and שמואל: if someone is מקדיש his field during the יובל year itself, does it become holy? רב says yes, and it is redeemed at the full price. שמואל says no. First רב knocks down שמואל's קל וחומר. A field consecrated before יובל never goes back to its owner anyway; it goes to the כהנים through הקדש. Then רב and שמואל argue over the פסוק 'וְאִם מִשְּׁנַת הַיּוֹבֵל': does 'from' include the יובל year or start after it? A ברייתא says a field consecrated in יובל 'is not holy.' רב first explains this as 'not holy with a deduction.' When that runs into trouble, he says the ברייתא follows the רבנן, while he follows רבי, who holds that 'from X' includes X. The גמרא then works through the math of 'a סלע and a פונדיון' per year and shows how it fits both רב and שמואל, depending on how the years of the cycle are counted. Finally, a משנה about not redeeming 'less than a year after the יובל' seems to support שמואל. The גמרא begins to answer for רב, and its explanation continues on the next amud.
