Topic

Closing the debate about backing out of a decision (רב יוסף vs. רבה), then the משנה's rule that a woman passes her estate to her son and husband, and the source that a mother inherits from her son

Overview

This amud opens by finishing an earlier debate about how long someone can back out of a decision. רב יוסף says it is too late once the parties move to a new topic, and רבה says it is too late once they stand up. רבה explains רב יהודה's case as one where the people stood up and sat down again, so the case proves nothing. Even so, the גמרא rules like רב יוסף in three topics: a field, the same topic, and half. Next the גמרא returns to the משנה and asks why 'a woman to her son' needs to be taught, since a man inheriting his mother was already stated. The answer is that the son is compared to the husband: neither one who died first can pass the woman's estate on 'from the grave.' Finally, רבי יוחנן brings a תורה source from the word 'מטות' (tribes) that a mother inherits from her son, just as a father does.

Opening lines

דְּקָמוּ וַהֲדַר יְתִיבוּ.

it is a case where they stood up and then sat back down.

וְהִלְכְתָא כְּווֹתֵיהּ דְּרַב יוֹסֵף

And the halacha follows רב יוסף
