What is included in a sale: a bathhouse, an olive press, and a whole city (slaves, the סנטר, and בית השלחין)
Overview
The amud opens with the end of a ברייתא: a plain sale of a בית המרחץ leaves out things like the wood storeroom, but 'and all its accompaniments' includes everything. In a real case, a man sold a בית הבד 'with all its accompaniments,' and there were stores outside it where sesame was dried. רב יוסף ruled from that ברייתא that the stores were sold. אביי challenged him from רבי חייא's ברייתא, which says not everything is sold. רב אשי decided that the stores are sold only if the seller also named boundaries that include them. Then a new משנה teaches that selling a city includes its fixed structures but not its מטלטלין, unless the seller says 'it and everything in it.' The גמרא tries to prove from this משנה that a slave counts as movable property, but רב אשי shows the proof fails. Last, the גמרא asks what רבן שמעון בן גמליאל's word סנטר means, either the land registrar or the fields, and tests each view against the משנה's term בית השלחין in two versions. The second version's challenge to the registrar view continues on the next amud.
