Whether riding an animal acquires it, compared to leading it, and whether holding the reins acquires
Overview
רב יהודה remembers that שמואל ruled about riding (רכוב) and leading (מנהיג) an animal: one acquires it and one does not, but he forgot which is which. Since leading clearly acquires, the גמרא explains that his real question was about one person riding while another leads. רב יהודה tries to solve it from a משנה in כלאים about the person sitting in a wagon. In שמואל's version, the חכמים exempt the sitter, so riding is not a real act and does not acquire. אביי questions who said this proof. The גמרא then shows that holding the reins (מוסירה) does not make a rider different, because reins only work when an owner hands an animal over, not for a found or ownerless animal. Our משנה of two riders seems to prove that a rider does acquire. The גמרא answers that the rider there is driving the animal with his legs, and that he and the one leading are equal. The amud ends as the גמרא begins a new proof from a ברייתא about pulling a camel or driving a donkey, which continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
שְׁמַעִית מִינֵּיהּ דְּמָר שְׁמוּאֵל תַּרְתֵּי:
I heard two rulings from Master Shmuel:
רָכוּב וּמַנְהִיג,
one who rides and one who leads an animal,
חַד קָנֵי וְחַד לָא קָנֵי.
one acquires and one does not acquire.
וְלָא יָדַעְנָא הֵי מִינַּיְיהוּ.
But I do not know which of them is which.
