Overview

This amud opens with the last line of the previous sugya, which explains the ציר (hinge) dispute between בית שמאי and בית הלל as a question of whether we make a גזירה. Then a new משנה begins: בית שמאי forbid carrying a child, a לולב, or a ספר תורה into the public domain on יום טוב, and בית הלל permit it. The גמרא brings a ברייתא that one who slaughters an עולת נדבה on יום טוב gets מלקות. רבי יצחק בר אבדימי says this follows only בית שמאי. בית הלל hold the principle of מתוך: once a מלאכה is permitted for a food need, it is permitted even without one, and that would apply to slaughter too. רבה suggests the משנה's dispute is instead about whether הוצאה applies on יום טוב at all. רב יוסף rejects this, because then the משנה should have argued about carrying stones, so the dispute must be about הוצאה שלא לצורך. The גמרא adds that רבי יוחנן also holds this. It begins to prove it from a ברייתא about cooking גיד הנשה in milk on יום טוב, which earns five sets of מלקות. The fifth is completed on the next amud.
