Separating תרומה on יום טוב, אביי's two versions about when legume bundles become טבל, and a לוי who took מעשר ראשון early.
Overview
The גמרא first resolves a contradiction about separating תרומה on יום טוב. It suggests that the משנה follows רבי יוסי ברבי יהודה and the ברייתא follows רבי, who disagree about grain stalks brought in to be husked. Because even רבי יוסי ברבי יהודה has a case where the obligation begins on יום טוב, the גמרא concludes instead that the משנה's ban covers only the usual case of תרומה. אביי then limits the dispute to grain stalks and says everyone agrees that legume bundles are טבל. An attempt to prove this from a ruling about bundles of תלתן fails, because תלתן was mentioned for a different lesson: you separate based on the seeds, not the flavorful stalks. In a second version, אביי says everyone agrees legume bundles are not טבל. The תלתן ruling is explained as referring to produce that is טבל only for תרומת מעשר, following ריש לקיש's rule about a לוי who took מעשר ראשון early. רבא explains that the required pounding is a penalty on that לוי. A ברייתא supports this, and its reasoning continues on the next amud.
