Pounding and sorting food on יום טוב, and which gifts (food and clothing, including כלאים) may be sent on יום טוב.
Overview
The amud opens with רבא settling two ברייתות about pounding grain in a small mortar on יום טוב: one ruling is for בבל and the other for ארץ ישראל. Then comes the story of רב פפי, who would not eat porridge at מר שמואל's house, with two possible reasons for his refusal. A new משנה follows about sorting legumes on יום טוב, with the views of בית שמאי, בית הלל and רבן גמליאל. The גמרא limits בית הלל's permission and explains how רבן גמליאל's household washed lentils. A second משנה discusses which gifts may be sent on יום טוב. The גמרא adds that gifts may not be carried in a procession of three people, and leaves רב אשי's question about three different foods as a תיקו. A third משנה allows sending clothes, even of כלאים, with the rule that anything usable on יום טוב may be sent. The גמרא then searches for a permitted use of כלאים and rejects several suggestions; the discussion continues on the next amud.
