The rules of ערובי תבשילין (size and דעת), and making ערובי חצרות on a יום טוב that falls on Friday
Overview
The amud opens by finishing an earlier point: in the הרסנא dish, the flour is the main part. רבי אבא then rules that an ערובי תבשילין must be at least a כזית, and one כזית works for one person or a hundred. Two sources that seem to allow less are read so they fit this rule. Next, רב says an ערובי תבשילין needs דעת. The גמרא shows from great רבנים who made one ערוב for a whole city that the people it covers do not need to know about it, as long as they are within the תחום שבת. A story about שמואל and a blind man shows that someone who keeps forgetting may not rely on another's ערוב. The גמרא then turns to a יום טוב on Friday: the תנא קמא forbids ערובי תחומין and ערובי חצרות, while רבי allows ערובי חצרות. רב and שמואל argue over the הלכה, and the גמרא tries to prove from a story whether ruling like רבי is lenient or strict. That discussion continues on the next amud.
