The second day of ראש השנה, baking thick bread on יום טוב, and רבן גמליאל's leniencies about sweeping and incense, including smoking fruit over coals.

Overview

The amud opens at the end of a challenge to אמימר. אמימר answers that he follows the scholars of נהרדעא: the second day of ראש השנה is like any second day of יום טוב, even for an egg, since אלול has not been made thirty days long since עזרא's time. The גמרא then turns to the משנה's rule that only thin loaves are baked on יום טוב. רב הונא measures 'thick bread' as one טפח, based on the לחם הפנים. רב יוסף objects that the Temple's baking conditions were very different. רב then explains that 'thick bread' really means a large batch, which is forbidden on any יום טוב because of needless effort, and a ברייתא supports this. A new משנה lists three leniencies of רבן גמליאל: sweeping, incense, and a whole-roasted kid on פסח night. A ברייתא about רבן גמליאל's household forces the גמרא to restate רב אסי: the argument is about incense for its smell, and perfuming clothes is forbidden by everyone. Finally, the גמרא discusses smoking fruit with spices, and רב הונא explains that it both puts out and lights the coals.
