רבן גמליאל's stringencies on יום טוב (insulating, the מנורה) and the limits on extinguishing and medical treatment on יום טוב and שבת

Overview

The amud opens by finishing an explanation of why רבן גמליאל's household did not insulate hot food on יום טוב for שבת. The first approach is that no עירובי תבשילין was made, and only a few basics are allowed; a ברייתא supports this list. רבא says instead that there was an עירוב, but insulating clearly shows it is for שבת. אביי rejects this from חנניה's version of בית שמאי and explains that the person made an עירוב for baking and cooking but not for insulating. Next, the גמרא explains that standing up a sectioned מנורה looks like building, which בית שמאי forbid for כלים. A story about עולא's servant tilting a lamp teaches that making a flame go out sooner counts as extinguishing. A series of questions follows about putting out a lamp or a fire on יום טוב for privacy or to save property, and about putting medicine on an eye; each is forbidden according to the רבנן. Each time, the ברייתא about the smoky log is explained as רבי יהודה's view. Finally, אמימר allows a גוי to treat an eye on שבת, because a helper's minor help counts for nothing. רב אשי then challenges his eye treatment on the second day of ראש השנה, and that challenge continues on the next amud.
