Animals from traps on יום טוב, and when a גוי's gift brought on יום טוב is permitted

Overview

A ברייתא teaches that on יום טוב one may slaughter animals from pens, but not animals found in nets or traps, since they may have been caught on יום טוב itself. רבי שמעון בן אלעזר explains that traps found sprung before יום טוב are permitted, but a case of doubt is treated as caught on יום טוב and is forbidden. רב יהודה in the name of שמואל rules like him. The גמרא then asks what רבן גמליאל meant in the משנה when he said a גוי's gift of fish is 'permitted.' רב says it may only be received, and לוי says it may even be eaten. רב explains that both heard רבי rule 'eat' in the evening, but only רב was there in the morning when רבי changed it to 'receive.' A ברייתא about a גוי's gift of fresh fish and fruit is shown to be about food that only looks fresh, so it fits both views. רב פפא gives the practical rule: if that kind of produce is still attached to the ground, the gift is forbidden, even after יום טוב for the time picking would take. If none is still growing and it came from within the תחום, it is permitted, and his ruling continues on the next amud.
