Topic

Readiness of food on יום טוב (the תחום, trapped fish, זימון for an orchard animal) and slaughtering a dying animal on יום טוב

Overview

The amud opens with the end of רב פפא's ruling: an item a non-Jew brings from outside the תחום on יום טוב is forbidden to the Jew it was brought for, but permitted to a different Jew. Next, רבה בר רב הונא quotes רב: fish found in a water channel that was dammed on ערב יום טוב are permitted. Someone learns from this that a wild animal nesting in an orchard needs no זימון. רב נחמן rejects this, because damming is an action while the orchard animal came on its own, and a ברייתא refutes the inference. A second ברייתא says the orchard animal needs no זימון. רב נחמן בר יצחק settles the clash: both ברייתות speak of a young animal, and the difference is whether the garden is near the city. A new משנה then teaches when a dying animal may be slaughtered on יום טוב, and how to bring meat home from the field. The גמרא quotes רמי בר אבא, who says meat should be skinned and cut up before eating. It then asks whether he is arguing with רב הונא, and the answer continues on the next amud.

The steps (22)

  1. StatementAn item brought from outside the boundary: forbidden to one Jew, permitted to another
  2. StatementFish found in a channel that was dammed before the holiday are permitted
  3. Statementרב חסדא learns: a wild animal nesting in an orchard needs no designation
  4. Rejectionרב נחמן: Our colleague has taken on something too big
  5. StatementAnother version: רבה בר רב הונא made the inference
  6. RejectionWhy the comparison fails: in the channel case the person took an action
  7. ChallengeA ברייתא says the orchard animal does need setting aside
  8. ConclusionThe inference is refuted
  9. ChallengeA second ברייתא says the orchard animal needs no setting aside
  10. StatementThe ברייתא continues: tied and shaken birds
  11. ResolutionOne ברייתא is about the baby, the other about the mother
  12. ChallengeIs setting aside enough for the mother?
  13. ResolutionBoth teachings are about the young animal: near garden versus far garden
  14. StatementSlaughtering a dying animal on a festival
  15. StatementBringing meat home from the field by hand
  16. StatementProper manners: skin and cut meat before eating
  17. QuestionWhat is רמי בר אבא teaching us?
  18. ResponseSuggestion: he argues with רב הונא
  19. ChallengeBut our משנה already agrees with רב הונא
  20. RejectionNo, it means the intestines
  21. Challengeרבי חייא says it means the actual slaughter spot
  22. ResponseA new explanation of רמי בר אבא begins
