מוקצה and fire on יום טוב: using wood for other jobs, firebrands, gathering kindling, and producing new fire
Overview
This amud first finishes a list of household items that follow one rule on יום טוב: hold the top piece first, then put the support underneath. The גמרא then quotes the משנה that one may not prop a pot with a piece of firewood. It corrects the wording so that a door is also something that may not be propped with wood. A ברייתא explains that wood is meant only for burning, so other uses are מוקצה, while רבי שמעון permits. The ברייתא also forbids leading an animal with a stick. The גמרא explains that the reason is not מוקצה but that it looks like a weekday trip to market. רב נחמן and רב ששת argue about roasting with a reed, and the גמרא reports the argument in two versions. The הלכה is that a dry reed is permitted and a wet reed is forbidden. רבא forbids taking a firebrand from the woodshed and burning a broken one, and the גמרא shows he holds of מוקצה even though he gave duck innards to his cat. A new משנה follows. It records an argument over gathering kindling from the courtyard, and it forbids producing new fire or heating tiles white-hot to roast on. The גמרא's discussion begins with רב יהודה.
