Why רבי יוחנן needed to list a courtyard, תרומה and a sale as things that fix produce for מעשר only once its work is finished, and three lessons learned from a ברייתא about buying figs from an עם הארץ.

Overview

Just before this amud, רבי יוחנן taught that a courtyard, separating תרומה, and a sale make produce 'fixed' for מעשר only once its work is finished. The גמרא explains that 'courtyard' rejects רבי יעקב and 'תרומה' rejects רבי אליעזר. For 'sale' it brings a teaching about buying figs from an עם הארץ, and draws three lessons from it. It then shows that the sale rule rejects the תנא קמא of a משנה about swapping fruit. With that, פרק המביא ends and a new פרק begins. The new משנה allows lowering produce through a skylight on יום טוב to save it from rain, and allows covering things or placing a vessel under a leak. The גמרא lists five accepted versions of the משנה's first word, all meaning 'to make fall down,' with a source for each. Finally it asks how much produce may be lowered. It answers 'four or five baskets,' then challenges that answer from both directions, and the discussion continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

חָצֵר — לְאַפּוֹקֵי מִדְּרַבִּי יַעֲקֹב.

Courtyard: this comes to exclude the view of Rabbi Ya'akov.

דִּתְנַן: הַמַּעֲבִיר תְּאֵנִים בַּחֲצֵרוֹ לְקַצּוֹת —

As we learned: one who carries figs through his courtyard to lay them out to dry,

בָּנָיו וּבְנֵי בֵּיתוֹ אוֹכְלִין מֵהֶן עֲרַאי,

his children and household members may eat from them casually,

וּפְטוּרִים מִן הַמַּעֲשֵׂר.

and they are exempt from tithes.
