עיקר וטפל, the praise of ארץ ישראל's fruit, and the after-blessing for fruits and grains (ברכה אחת מעין שלש)

Overview

The amud opens with a משנה about עיקר וטפל: one ברכה on the main food covers a secondary food eaten with it, even bread eaten alongside salted food. The גמרא explains that this happens with the very sweet פירות גינוסר, where salty food balances the sweetness and bread only helps with the salty food. It then tells exaggerated stories praising פירות גינוסר and the abundance of ארץ ישראל. These include ינאי המלך's huge harvests on הר המלך and the eighty priestly couples of גופנית. רב and רבי יוחנן add what a meal needs to count as a real meal: salt, or a cooked dish with gravy. A new משנה follows. רבן גמליאל requires full ברכת המזון after grapes, figs and pomegranates, the חכמים require one blessing summarizing the three, and רבי עקיבא and רבי טרפון add their own rulings. The גמרא explains how each side reads the verses, rules that grain foods and the שבעת המינים get ברכה אחת מעין שלש afterward, and gives its wording. It ends by settling the closing line: after a reversal, 'ועל פירותיה' is said in ארץ ישראל and 'ועל הפירות' outside it.
