Levels of purity in the משנה, hand-washing for חולין and מעשר, and intent in washing (חגיגה 18b)

Overview

This משנה lays out a ladder of holiness: חולין, then מעשר, then תרומה, then קודש, then חטאת (the water of the red heifer). Each higher level demands more care about purity. First it shows how hands are purified for each level. Next it teaches that a טבילה counts only for the level a person had in mind. It then shows that clothes are treated as מדרס for anyone one level stricter, even the clothes of great people like יוסף בן יועזר and יוחנן בן גודגדא. The גמרא then asks whether חולין and מעשר really need hand-washing, since a משנה in ביכורים says they do not. It solves the מעשר clash by showing that רבי מאיר and חכמים disagree about it. After רב שימי בר אשי rejects an eating-versus-touching answer, the גמרא settles the חולין clash: bread needs washing and fruit does not. Finally a ברייתא says washing hands needs intent, another ברייתא says it does not, and רב נחמן begins to resolve them. His answer continues on the next amud.

לַחוּלִּין וְלַמַּעֲשֵׂר וְלַתְּרוּמָה,

for non-holy food, for tithe, and for teruma;

וְלַקּוֹדֶשׁ — מַטְבִּילִין.

but for sacrificial food, one immerses (the hands).

וְלַחַטָּאת — אִם נִטְמְאוּ יָדָיו,

And for the purification water, if his hands became impure,
