Overview

The amud opens at the end of a ברייתא brought as a challenge to רבי יוחנן. In it, רבי יהודה disagrees with רבי מאיר about immersing in the upper of two stacked pools, which shows that רבי יהודה does not hold the idea of 'raising the partition'. רבי יוחנן accepts this: if the ברייתא says so, it says so. The גמרא then goes back to our משנה, which says that immersing for חולין does not count for מעשר, and explains that this is the view of the רבנן, who treat חולין and מעשר differently. But the end of the same משנה lists levels of purity with no separate level for מעשר, which sounds like רבי מאיר. The גמרא's first answer is that the משנה is split: the beginning is the רבנן and the end is רבי מאיר. רב אחא בר אדא avoids the split by reading five levels at the end, so the whole משנה follows the רבנן. Finally, רב מרי learns from the משנה that חולין prepared with the purity standards of קודש are treated like קודש, and the גמרא asks where this comes from. The answer comes on the next amud.
