The גמרא asks how a small child even reached ירושלים, and אביי explains that his mother brought him, since she comes anyway for the מצוה of שמחה. רבי tries to prove בית הלל's age rule from חנה, who kept שמואל home until he was weaned. His father rejects the proof: חנה stayed home only to protect a delicate child. רבי שמעון then asks about a lame or blind child who might heal. אביי rules that a child is trained only where an adult in the same condition would be obligated. The גמרא then turns to the minimum value of the ראייה and חגיגה offerings, where בית שמאי and בית הלל each give two reasons and answer each other's arguments. The debate comes down to whether the עולות brought at סיני were עולות ראייה or the עולת תמיד. אביי lists other תנאים on each side, and the גמרא begins tracing their sources, a discussion that continues on the next amud.
