Festival rejoicing, dividing offerings between שלמים and עולות, and bringing leftover חגיגה animals on later days

Overview

The amud opens by finishing a דרשה on 'ושמחת בחגך': only animals that can be brought as a חגיגה count for festival rejoicing, so birds and מנחות are left out. רב אשי learns the same rule from 'ושמחת' alone, and uses 'בחגך' for רב's rule that one does not marry during the מועד. A new משנה then explains how to split festival offerings between שלמים and עולות, depending on how many people one has to feed and how much money one has. The גמרא asks how a poor person can bring many שלמים. רב חסדא answers that he combines his money with מעשר שני money to buy a big bull. רב ששת adds that one may even combine and bring more animals, and the גמרא uses a ברייתא about 'the first eating' to show his view can stand. Finally, ריש לקיש and רבי יוחנן argue about whether leftover חגיגה animals may be brought on a later day of the festival. רבי אבא explains that they are speaking about different cases: whether or not the person said his plan from the start. The גמרא proves this from two reports of רבי יוחנן and begins bringing a third report, which continues on the next amud.
