Making up the קרבן חגיגה on the later days of the רגל and on שמיני עצרת, and what 'make-up' (תשלומין) means
Overview
The amud opens by finishing an earlier discussion. The rule against bringing the חגיגה on the later days applies only when the first day had not yet ended; if the day ran out, he may go back and offer. A new משנה then teaches that someone who missed the חגיגה on the first day of סוכות may bring it all through the רגל, even on שמיני עצרת. Once the רגל passes, he owes nothing. The משנה applies the פסוק 'what is crooked cannot be made straight,' and רבי שמעון בן מנסיא and רבי שמעון בן יוחאי each give their own reading of that פסוק. The גמרא finds the source for שמיני עצרת in a גזירה שוה on the word 'עצרת,' and shows the word is extra. It also brings a ברייתא that reads the same rule from 'אותו' and 'seven days.' Next, רבי יוחנן and רבי אושעיא disagree about what 'make-up' means, and רבי זירא shows that the dispute matters for a חיגר who was healed on the second day. The גמרא challenges רבי יוחנן from his ruling about a נזיר, and רבי ירמיה answers that טומאה is different because of פסח שני. רב פפא then begins an objection that continues on the next amud.
