Measuring a כזית for אבר מן החי and other forbidden foods: throat or stomach. The close of גיד הנשה and the opening משנה of כל הבשר
Overview
The amud first finishes a point from the previous page: the איסור of טריפה can take effect on חלב, which has a permitted form, but not on an אבר מן החי, which never does. Next comes a case of a כזית-sized אבר מן החי split in two and eaten. רב דימי and רבין report differently what רבי יוחנן and ריש לקיש said. Everyone agrees that splitting it outside the mouth makes him פטור. When it is split inside the mouth, רבי יוחנן says חייב because his throat enjoyed a כזית, and in רבין's version ריש לקיש says פטור because a full כזית must reach the stomach. רבי אלעזר adds that he is חייב even if the limb was split outside the mouth. The same throat-versus-stomach argument explains their מחלוקת about food on the palate, as רב פפא clarifies. רבי יוחנן also rules that someone who ate half a זית, vomited it, and ate another half is liable. The story of רבי אלעזר reminding רבי אסי shows that the same idea applies when someone eats the same vomited half again. The פרק of גיד הנשה then ends, and פרק כל הבשר opens with a משנה forbidding all meat with milk, except fish and grasshoppers.
