How many sets of lashes for eating one piece that carries several prohibitions: אבר מן החי, טרפה and חלב
Overview
רבי יוחנן and ריש לקיש argue about someone who eats an אבר מן החי from an animal that is a טרפה. רבי יוחנן says he gets lashes twice, and ריש לקיש says only once. רב יוסף explains that everyone agrees to two sets of lashes when the limb and the טרפה meat come from two different animals. The argument is only about one animal. The גמרא then gives several ways to explain that argument. אביי sets it at an animal that became a טרפה at birth. Two more explanations turn it into a question of whether a later prohibition can take effect on one that is already there. רבא sets it at a limb whose tearing off made the animal a טרפה. Next comes a dispute over רבי יוחנן's ruling about eating חלב from a living טרפה: is it two sets of lashes or three? The same kinds of explanations appear again, including a proof from the פסוק that lets נבלה and טרפה take effect on חלב. The other side's answer, that חלב is different because it has permitted cases, continues on the next amud.

Rabbi Yoḥanan says: He is liable twice,
וְרַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן לָקִישׁ אָמַר:
and Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish says:
אֵינוֹ חַיָּיב אֶלָּא אַחַת.
He is liable only once.
The steps (20)
- StatementThe dispute over a limb from a living טרפה
- Challengeריש לקיש's view seems difficult
- Resolutionרב יוסף: one animal versus two animals
- QuestionWhat exactly is the one-animal case?
- Responseאביי: it became a טרפה at the moment of birth, and רבי יוחנן's reasoning
- Responseריש לקיש's side: limbs are not separate units, so the limb prohibition comes too late
- ResponseSecond explanation: both agree on limbs, and they argue whether the limb prohibition can land on the טרפה prohibition
- ResponseThird explanation: both agree limbs are units, and they argue whether the טרפה prohibition can land on the limb prohibition
- Responseרבא's case: tearing off a limb makes the animal a טרפה
- Responseריש לקיש's side in רבא's version
- Statementרבי יוחנן: eating חלב from a living טרפה gets two sets of lashes
- Challengeרבי אמי: the report should say three
- Proofרבי אבהו's report also says three
- QuestionWhat do the two versions disagree about?
- ResponseWhy three: all three prohibitions arrive at birth
- ResponseThe reasoning of the 'two lashes' side
- ResponseSecond explanation: they argue whether the limb prohibition can land on top
- ResponseThird explanation: they argue whether a later טרפה prohibition can land on the limb prohibition
- ProofThe 'three' side learns from the case of חלב
- RejectionThe other side says חלב is a special case
