How much must one eat to be liable for אבר מן החי (a limb from a living creature)? The גמרא challenges the view (stated before this section, attributed to רב) that a כזית is needed, using two ברייתות that seem to say even a tiny amount is enough.
Overview
The amud opens by answering a challenge from רב's own statement, which says that a live kosher bird makes one liable for any amount. The גמרא explains that the meat may be tiny, but together with the sinews and bones it adds up to a כזית. Next comes a ברייתא where רבי and רבי אלעזר ברבי שמעון argue about someone who ate a whole live bird smaller than a כזית. רב נחמן gives the same answer: a little meat plus sinews and bones. The גמרא then asks whether such a bird exists, and the answer is a kosher bird built like the bony קלניתא. רבא then shows how 'thought about food' could change the result for each תנא, and he defends this against אביי: each person is judged by his own thought. Finally, רבי יוחנן and ריש לקיש argue over which פסוק forbids אבר מן החי, בשר מן החי and בשר מן הטרפה. The גמרא shows how their views change the number of sets of lashes. It then begins to raise a contradiction, which continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
אָכַל צִפּוֹר טְהוֹרָה בְּחַיֶּיהָ –
If one ate a kosher bird while it was alive –
בְּכׇל שֶׁהוּא,
he is liable for any amount,
בְּמִיתָתָהּ – בִּכְזַיִת,
if it was dead – only for an olive-bulk,
וּטְמֵאָה בֵּין בְּחַיֶּיהָ בֵּין בְּמִיתָתָהּ –
and a non-kosher bird, whether alive or dead –
