How much of the hand must be washed for חולין, for תרומה, and for קידוש ידים ורגלים in the מקדש; what counts as a חציצה; and רב's rule that one morning washing can last all day with a condition.
Overview
The amud opens by finishing a ברייתא about how far up the hand water must reach for נטילת ידים, and how far for קידוש ידים ורגלים in the מקדש. It also teaches that anything that is a חציצה for טבילה is also a חציצה for both kinds of washing. רב, שמואל and רב ששת then point to their fingers and disagree about where 'the joint' is. רב gives one limit for חולין and a farther one for תרומה. שמואל uses the farther joint for both, and רב ששת uses the closer joint for both. בר הדיא reports that רבי אמי followed the strict view for both. The גמרא rules out the idea that רבי אמי was strict only because he was a כהן, since רבי מיישא, a לוי, said the same. Finally, רב teaches that one may wash in the morning with a condition that it counts all day. A story about רבי אבינא begins here and continues on the next amud.
