Rules of נטילת ידים: whole-day stipulation, channel water, valid vessels, the רביעית, and eating with a cloth
Overview
The amud opens by finishing רבי אבינא's advice to people short of water: wash once in the morning and make a condition that it covers the whole day. Two versions argue over whether this works only in a שעת הדחק, which decides whether he agrees with רב. רב פפא then rules on washing from a channel filled by buckets. A bucket with a hole joins the channel to the river, so hands may be dipped there, but the bucket itself is useless for pouring. רבא requires a רביעית of water. The גמרא settles two statements of his by saying two people may share water that started as a full רביעית. A second version of אמימר's answer claims the amount does not matter, and the גמרא rejects it, while sages are shown making vessels that hold a רביעית. רבא and a ברייתא rule that a prepared barrel stopper or wineskin is a valid vessel, but a sack or basket is not. Finally the גמרא asks whether one may eat holding food in a cloth instead of washing. A proof from רבי צדוק is rejected, and a new proof from שמואל and רב begins, continuing on the next amud.
