The udder (כחל): the ברייתא's wording, the source of רב's strict ruling, and stories about local customs of eating udders
Overview
This amud opens by finishing an explanation of the ברייתא's wording: it said 'cooked' about the udder only to match its second clause. Next, רבי אלעזר asks whether any תנא taught רב his strict ruling on udders. In one version, רב יצחק בר אבודימי says he never taught it. רב made a protective fence after seeing that the people of טטלפוש did not even know that בשר בחלב is forbidden. In a second version, he taught about a nursing animal's udder but said only 'udder'. The גמרא then tells of רבין, who refused an udder dish at רב פפי's house, and אביי's argument that the dish was surely permitted. Finally, רמי בר תמרי from פומבדיתא eats udders in סורא, where people do not eat them. רב חסדא questions him about the local custom, the grape seeds he roasted with (יין נסך and theft), his not wearing תפילין, and his garment without ציצית. His answer about the borrowed garment continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
שֶׁבִּשְּׁלָהּ בַּחֲלָבָהּ – אֲסוּרָה,
[In the second clause:] that one cooked in its milk – is forbidden,
דַּאֲפִילּוּ דִּיעֲבַד נָמֵי לָא,
where even after the fact it is also not [allowed],
תְּנָא נָמֵי רֵישָׁא שֶׁבִּשְּׁלָהּ.
[so] the תנא also taught the first clause as 'that one cooked it.'
