Meat absorbing dairy or blood: produce cut with a meat knife, salt and vinegar near dairy, a bird fallen into כמכא, bread soaked with meat juice, and catching drippings from roasting meat.
Overview
This amud finishes a discussion about vegetables cut with a meat knife and then eaten with כותח, a salty dairy dip. A sharp radish soaks up the meat, but a cucumber only needs the cut spot scraped. Turnip stalks are fine and chard is not. Next, רב נחמן rules that a jar of salt may not stand next to a jar of dairy כמכא, but a jar of vinegar may, because dairy stays in salt and dissolves in vinegar. Then a young bird falls into כמכא and is permitted, because the dip is salty but still edible, so שמואל's rule that salted food is like boiling food does not apply. That leniency covers only a raw bird. A roasted bird needs peeling, and a cracked or spiced bird is fully forbidden. שמואל rules that bread that meat was cut on is forbidden, but only under three conditions, and the גמרא tells how שמואל, רב הונא and רבא handled such bread. Last, שמואל forbids putting a dish under roasting meat until its redness is gone. רב אשי rejects the smoke sign and begins a remedy using two lumps of salt, which continues on the next amud.
