The priestly gifts: why קדשים are exempt from זרוע, לחיים and קבה, why חולין are exempt from חזה ושוק, and the status of blemished קדשים

Overview

This amud opens the chapter on the priestly gifts. The משנה rules that the זרוע, לחיים and קבה apply everywhere and at all times, but only to חולין, not to קדשים. A קל וחומר would have obligated קדשים too, but the פסוק 'ואתן אותם' limits the כהן's share of a sacrifice to the חזה ושוק. The משנה then contrasts two kinds of blemished קדשים. If the מום came before the הקדש, the redeemed animal is like חולין and owes the gifts. If the הקדש came first, much of its holiness stays. In the גמרא, it asks why the פסוק was needed when the קל וחומר seems easy to refute. After trying several bases, it shows that the קל וחומר from a bought or orphaned animal really works. It then asks the reverse: why don't חולין owe חזה ושוק? The answer is the word 'וזה' in the פסוק. The amud ends by questioning whether waving חולין was ever possible, and that discussion continues on the next amud.

The steps (17)

  1. StatementThe priestly gifts apply everywhere, but only to non-sacred animals
  2. ChallengeA logical argument that sacrifices should owe the gifts too
  3. ResolutionA verse limits the priest to breast and thigh from sacrifices
  4. StatementAnimals blemished before consecration become ordinary after redemption
  5. StatementMore rules for animals whose blemish came before their consecration
  6. StatementThe opposite case: consecration came before the blemish
  7. StatementHoliness that stays even after redemption
  8. ChallengeWhy would we think sacrificial animals owe the gifts?
  9. RejectionThe קל וחומר from ordinary animals breaks down
  10. RejectionTrying to learn from male animals, which is also rejected
  11. RejectionTrying to learn from male goats, which is also rejected
  12. RejectionTrying to learn from old male goats, which is also rejected
  13. RejectionTrying a bought or orphaned animal, which is not tithed
  14. ConclusionThe 'their kind' argument works for קדשים too, so the קל וחומר stands
  15. ChallengeShould ordinary animals give breast and thigh?
  16. ResolutionThe פסוק says 'this': only the listed gifts come from ordinary animals
  17. ChallengeWhy would we need a verse? Waving חולין seems impossible
