Keeping the gifts when a כהן sells his animal, who the כהן claims from, and how doubts about a convert's obligations are decided
Overview
The גמרא first tests the rule that a כהן who sells his animal 'חוץ מן המתנות' keeps the gifts. It explains that 'חוץ' holds the gifts back, while whether 'על מנת' does so is a מחלוקת between two ברייתות. Next, רב and רב אסי argue whether a כהן can also claim the maw from the butcher who weighed the innards. The גמרא traces their argument to whether מתנות כהונה can be stolen. A new משנה rules that a גר whose cow was slaughtered before he converted is exempt from the gifts, and in a case of doubt he is also exempt. ריש לקיש challenges this from רבי מאיר's rule that doubtful לקט goes to the poor, and he rejects רבי יוחנן's answer. רבא explains that the cow starts out exempt while standing grain starts out obligated. When אביי asks about a convert's חלה, רבא answers that doubts about a prohibition are strict and doubts about money are lenient. רב חסדא's list of a convert's eight doubts supports this, and the four exempt cases continue on the next amud.
