Finishing the פרה אדומה cases, the rules and measures of pausing during שחיטה (שהייה), and a new משנה on flawed שחיטות that make an animal a נבלה or a טרפה.
Overview
The amud finishes רבא's rules about a פרה אדומה slaughtered together with something else. An animal slaughtered with it by accident depends on the מחלוקת between רבי נתן and רבנן. A gourd cut on purpose ruins the פרה according to everyone, and a gourd cut by accident does not. Then a new משנה teaches that a pause (שהייה) in the middle of שחיטה makes it invalid. The תנא קמא measures the pause as 'כדי שחיטה' and רבי שמעון measures it as 'כדי ביקור'. The גמרא brings several opinions on how long 'כדי שחיטה' is, including רב, שמואל, רבי יוחנן, רבי חנניא and the scholars of ארץ ישראל. רבא rules that slow, nonstop cutting with a blunt knife is kosher. Questions about pauses that add up and a pause during the last part of the סימנין are raised and not resolved. The amud closes with a new משנה on flawed שחיטות (נבלה or טרפה), and the גמרא begins a contradiction that continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
נִשְׁחֲטָה בְּהֵמָה אַחֶרֶת עִמָּהּ,
If another animal was slaughtered along with it,
לְרַבִּי נָתָן – פָּרָה פְּסוּלָה
according to רבי נתן – the heifer is invalid
בְּהֵמָה כְּשֵׁרָה,
and the animal is kosher,
לְרַבָּנַן – פָּרָה כְּשֵׁרָה
according to the Rabbis – the heifer is valid
