When a windpipe is severed during שחיטה, is the animal a נבלה or a טרפה? Several answers to the clash between the sources, followed by ריש לקיש's ruling about a punctured lung and how far it reaches.

Overview

The גמרא has just said that רבי עקיבא changed his mind and agreed with רבי ישבב: an animal that becomes unfit during its שחיטה is a נבלה. It challenges this from the משנה in אלו טרפות, which calls a severed windpipe only a טרפה. רבא first answers that the order of the cuts matters. רב אחא בר הונא knocks that down from a ברייתא, so רבא answers instead that the משנה is a general list of forbidden animals: some on it are נבלות and some are טרפות. The list leaves out נבלות that are already טמא while alive, like the cases of חזקיה and רבי אלעזר. ריש לקיש offers a different answer, based on whether the gullet was cut at the same spot as the windpipe's cut. That answer is challenged from his own ruling about a punctured lung. Finally רבי יוחנן explains that one משנה is from before רבי עקיבא's retraction and one from after, and a משנה is not moved from its place. The גמרא then studies ריש לקיש's lung ruling: רבא limits it to the lung, רבי זירא objects but takes his objection back, and the גמרא begins comparing רבי זירא's question to אילפא's question about a fetus.
