Overview

The amud opens with the last words of an earlier ruling: being careful at the level of תרומה still counts as impure when it comes to קודש. רבי זירא then reports, through a chain of sages, a ruling of רבי ינאי. If someone eats a שלישי of חולין that were handled with the purity of קודש, his body becomes a שני for קודש. רבי זירא challenges this from a משנה that mentions only the purity of תרומה. רבי אסי answers that the משנה uses a 'לא מיבעיא' style, and the גמרא finally explains that רבי אסי and רבה בר בר חנה disagree about רבי יוחנן's view. Next, עולא rules that eating a שלישי of חולין handled with the purity of תרומה disqualifies a person from eating תרומה. The גמרא shows why עולא's rule was needed even though the משנה seems to hint at it. Finally, רב המנונא challenges עולא from a משנה that allows a שלישי to be eaten in a stew mixed with תרומה. עולא begins to answer by setting the stew case aside, and his reason continues on the next amud.
