Blood and הכשר לטומאה: blood splashed during שחיטה, and whether חבת הקודש works like contact with water

Overview

The amud opens by finishing an earlier point: a פסוק was needed to teach that we may benefit from the blood of פסולי המוקדשין. Next, דבי רבי ישמעאל teaches that blood that spurts out at slaughter (דם קילוח) does not make seeds able to become טמא. A ברייתא then brings a מחלוקת about blood that splashed onto a gourd during שחיטה: רבי says the gourd is מוכשר, and רבי חייא says תולין. רבי אושעיא suggests relying on רבי שמעון, who holds that the שחיטה makes the animal susceptible, not the blood. רב פפא and רב אשי each explain the dispute and the word תולין differently. Each time, the גמרא shows how רבי שמעון and רבי חייא reach the same practical result, so רבי is outnumbered. Finally, ריש לקיש asks whether dry flour of a מנחה, open to טומאה only through חבת הקודש, passes טומאה on to a ראשון and a שני. רבי אלעזר answers from a פסוק, and the גמרא begins to show that his proof comes from an extra פסוק; the discussion continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

סָלְקָא דַּעְתָּךְ אָמֵינָא:

It could enter your mind to say:

הוֹאִיל וַאֲסִירִי בְּגִיזָּה וַעֲבוֹדָה,

since they are forbidden in fleece and labor,

דָּמָן לִבְעֵי קְבוּרָה,

their blood should require burial,

קָא מַשְׁמַע לַן.

so it teaches us that it does not.
