רבי יצחק on תרומה-level purity and fourth-level impurity in קודש; רב אסי on whether, for רבי שמעון, שחיטה or blood makes meat susceptible to impurity

Overview

The גמרא finishes a discussion about whether the rule 'purity kept at the תרומה level counts as impurity for קודש' applies to food as well as clothing. רבי יצחק says it does. רבי ירמיה מדיפתי challenges him from a משנה about holy wine poured into a barrel of תרומה wine. רבי יצחק answers that a mixed barrel is a special case of trust (מגו). Next, רב הונא בר נתן brings a source in which non-sacred food kept at קודש-level purity can disqualify holy food. The גמרא answers that this is a dispute between תנאים. Then the גמרא turns to רבי שמעון in the משנה, and רב אסי explains that for רבי שמעון the שחיטה, not the blood, makes the meat susceptible to impurity. Proofs for and against רב אסי are each pushed off, mainly by contrasting the blood of killed animals with the blood of a dead animal or a wound. The גמרא ends by bringing the פסוק behind blood of killed animals, and it explains that the 'like water' פסוק about blood of שחיטה teaches a different law.

Opening lines

שֶׁמָּא תֵּשֵׁב עֲלֵיהֶן אִשְׁתּוֹ נִדָּה,

lest his wife sit upon them while she is a niddah,

אֲבָל בְּפֵירֵי לָא אָמְרִינַן.

but regarding produce we do not say this.

וְרַבִּי יִצְחָק בְּפֵירֵי נָמֵי אָמַר.

And Rabbi Yitzchak says it regarding produce as well.

  12. RejectionThe opposite case may be blood of killed animals
  13. ChallengeThen why not teach the slaughter case?
  14. ResolutionThe dead-animal case needed to be taught
  15. ChallengeBlood of a wound seems to imply slaughter blood works
  16. RejectionAgain, the opposite case may be killed animals
  17. ChallengeBut what about slaughter blood?
  18. ChallengeThen he should have taught blood of slaughter instead
  19. ResolutionThe wound case was needed on its own
