Overview

רבא gives two rules about the lung. First, two cysts next to each other make the animal a טרפה. A single cyst that only looks like two is tested by piercing it with a thorn. Second, a healthy lung has five lobes, three on the right and two on the left. רבא says a missing, extra, or switched lobe makes the animal a טרפה. In a story, מרימר rules that the הלכה does not follow רבא about an extra lobe. The גמרא limits this to an extra lobe that sits in line with the others; one in between the sides is a טרפה. Then רב הונא מר בר אויא tells רב אשי that field animals commonly have an in-between 'little rose lobe', which is כשרה, and the גמרא begins to limit that to a lobe on the inside face of the lung.
