The decrees against the כותים, and whether a mixture containing דמאי is permitted.
Overview
The גמרא first proves that רבי זירא accepted the report that רבן גמליאל forbade a כותי's שחיטה even when a Jew watches. It then explains why the decree was made. After an old man warned רבי שמעון בן אלעזר with a פסוק, רבי מאיר decreed against the כותים, because some of them worshipped a dove image on הר גריזים, and he takes a minority into account. The גמרא also explains that the plain meaning of that פסוק is about a student sitting before his teacher. Later, רבי אמי and רבי אסי made the כותים 'complete גוים'. Their ban on שחיטה and wine was finally accepted, and 'complete גוים' also means they lose a Jew's power to give up courtyard rights on שבת. Then רבי זירא sees רב אסי eat eggs cooked in wine and proves that a ready-made mixture with דמאי is permitted. The amud ends by answering challenges from a ברייתא about leaven and spices and from a משנה about a mother-in-law who swaps food.
