Topic
Two sources for rejecting a משומד's קרבן, the meaning of 'בהמה' said about people, and רבן גמליאל's ban on the שחיטה of a כותי.
Overview
The גמרא brings a ברייתא that learns from 'מעם הארץ' that a משומד cannot bring a קרבן. In the same ברייתא, רבי שמעון learns this from a different phrase, and רב המנונא shows where the two views differ. Since an earlier source on the דף ('מכם') already excluded a משומד, the גמרא explains that one source is about a חטאת and the other about an עולה, and shows why both are needed. Next, the גמרא asks whether calling people 'בהמה' always means a weakness, and it carefully separates 'בהמה' alone, 'אדם ובהמה' together, and the two separate groups in ירמיהו. Then a new topic begins: רבן גמליאל's בית דין voted to forbid the שחיטה of a כותי. רבי יעקב בר אידי insists the ban covers even a כותי watched by a Jew, and the גמרא asks if רבי זירא agreed. A story about רבי יוחנן and רבי אסי eating a כותי's שחיטה leads רבי זירא to conclude that they knew the ban and did not accept it, since ה׳ protects צדיקים from eating forbidden food by mistake.
