רב ענן's view on the שחיטה of a משומד for עבודה זרה: proofs from יהושפט, אחאב and אליהו, and its refutation from ברייתות

Overview

The גמרא is discussing רב ענן's view that a Jew who serves idols, like אחאב, can still do a kosher שחיטה. First it insists that יהושפט, a righteous king, did not keep himself apart from אחאב, and proves this from the two kings sitting facing each other like a סנהדרין. A support from אליהו, whom the ravens fed meat from אחאב's slaughterhouse, is pushed off because אליהו ate by the direct word of הקב"ה. A side discussion proves that those עורבים were real ravens. They were not two men named עורב, and not people from a place called עורב. Next, a ברייתא that lets "even a ישראל משומד" slaughter seems to support רב ענן. The גמרא explains that this משומד is someone who eats נבילות, following רבא. Finally, a ברייתא about who may bring קרבנות shows that a משומד for עבודה זרה counts as a משומד for the whole תורה, so רב ענן is fully refuted. The amud ends by asking whether the rule excluding a משומד from bringing קרבנות really comes from this פסוק or from a different one.

Opening lines

לָא הֲוָה מְפַלֵּיג נַפְשֵׁיהּ מִינֵּיהּ,

He would not have separated himself from him,

מְנָלַן?

From where do we know this?

אִילֵּימָא מִדִּכְתִיב

If you say it is from what is written:

״כָּמוֹנִי כָמוֹךָ כְּעַמִּי כְעַמֶּךָ״,

"I am as you are, my people as your people,"
