Topic

Whether a כוי (a goat-deer hybrid) counts as a farm animal: its status for אותו ואת בנו, covering its blood on יום טוב, and the כהן's gifts, and whether the father's species counts.

Overview

This amud opens with the last line of the previous discussion: distinguishing signs (סימנין) count on a Torah level. Then a ברייתא records a dispute about אותו ואת בנו, the ban on slaughtering a mother and its offspring on one day. חכמים apply it to a כוי, and רבי אליעזר does not. רב חסדא says the disputed כוי comes from a goat and a deer. The גמרא shows that the case is a hybrid daughter slaughtered with her own son. The רבנן count the father and hold that 'partly a שה' is enough. A משנה forbids slaughtering a כוי on יום טוב and covering its blood. From it, the גמרא learns that the רבנן are only in doubt whether the father counts. A ברייתא about the כהן's gifts then forces the גמרא to say that רבי אליעזר is also in doubt. The amud ends by asking what the two sides disagree about if both share the same doubt. The answer comes on the next amud.

Opening lines

וְסִימָנִין דְּאוֹרָיְיתָא.

And distinguishing signs are by Torah law.

תָּנוּ רַבָּנַן:

The Sages taught:

אוֹתוֹ וְאֶת בְּנוֹ נוֹהֵג

The law of "it and its offspring" applies

בְּכִלְאַיִם וּבְכוֹי.

to hybrids and to a koy.

The steps (22)

  1. ConclusionDistinguishing signs count on a Torah level
  2. StatementA ברייתא: does אותו ואת בנו apply to hybrids and to a כוי?
  3. Statementרב חסדא defines which כוי is under dispute
  4. QuestionHow exactly does this case happen?
  5. ChallengeFirst option: a doe mother, but everyone exempts that case
  6. ChallengeSecond option: a goat mother, but everyone obligates that case
  7. ResolutionThe real case: the hybrid daughter and her son
  8. ResolutionThe two reasons behind the dispute
  9. ChallengeWhy not argue about the father question alone?
  10. ResolutionThe hybrid case teaches 'even partly a שה'
  11. ChallengeQuoting the משנה about slaughtering a כוי on יום טוב
  12. ChallengeIf the mother is a deer, everyone would require covering
  13. ChallengeIf the father is a deer, neither view fits the משנה
  14. ResolutionThe רבנן are unsure whether the father counts
  15. ConclusionFor רבי אליעזר, the father clearly does not count
  16. ChallengeA ברייתא about the כהן's gifts from a כוי
  17. QuestionTesting the case of a male goat and a female deer
  18. ChallengeWhy should the owner give anything, according to the רבנן?
  19. ResolutionA new case: a deer father and a goat mother
  20. ChallengeThe new case fits the רבנן but not רבי אליעזר
  21. Resolutionרבי אליעזר is also unsure about the father
  22. ChallengeIf both sides are unsure, what do they argue about?
